The Glass House Mountains were formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity. Molten lava solidified into volcanic plugs, creating unique dome-shaped peaks. The mountains hold great cultural significance for the Traditional Owners of the land, including the Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara peoples. These mountains feature prominently in Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and are considered sacred sites. Each peak has its own Indigenous name and significance in local lore. James Cook, upon sailing up the eastern coast of Australia in 1770, named the peaks the "Glass Houses" because they reminded him of the glass furnaces in his native Yorkshire, England.
